Carolina Public Press: North Carolina Investigative Journalism Collaborative
In Brief
Carolina Public Press’ North Carolina Investigative Journalism Collaborative will pilot collaborative investigative news efforts statewide, organize listening sessions among residents and members of the news media, and explore ways for generating self-sustaining revenue.
Summary
Carolina Public Press is an independent nonprofit news organization established in 2011 with a focus on in-depth and investigative news in Western North Carolina. In 2018, it expanded to cover the entire state. CPP has a long list of investigations and awards. In 2016, it won a statewide award for its mental health coverage. In 2017, it engaged every corner of the state for an investigation of the state’s home health care system, an investigative reporting project that went on to win additional statewide awards.
CPP will lead the North Carolina Investigative Journalism Collaborative, which will launch collaborations between state and local media outlets, organize listening sessions between residents and members of the media statewide, and experiment with new ways to generate its own self-sustaining revenue. The collaborative draws from an existing, strong network of media professionals across North Carolina with a successful track record of investigative reporting.
In Their Own Words
“Carolina Public Press is thrilled to partner with the North Carolina Local News Lab Fund in investing in independent, in-depth, and investigative reporting in North Carolina. We announced in February that Carolina Public Press is growing from its roots in western North Carolina to provide award-winning journalism and programming across the state. We are excited that the Fund agreed that now is the time expand efforts to provide consistent, unique and trustworthy investigative journalism that has coordinated, statewide impact.”
