NC Health News

In Brief

North Carolina Health News is a leading news source on information about health care for residents, policymakers, lobbyists, and healthcare workers across North Carolina.

Summary

NC Health News is an independent, not-for-profit news organization serving the state of North Carolina. Founded in 2011, NC Health News has published more than 1,900 stories on state health care news. It is a source for policymakers, lobbyists, health care workers and the public statewide. It has produced award-winning work over the years, including stories on the opioid crisisdisability services, and the link between asthma and home quality.

NC Health News fills a gap created by a decline in state health reporters, especially in rural North Carolina. The publication has a well-established base of professional journalists and a strong emphasis on collaboration with other news organizations in the state. With this grant, the NC Health News staff will continue and strengthen the organization’s work, including conducting listening tours with communities and forging new collaborations.

In Their Own Words

“We’re so grateful to the Democracy Fund for the opportunity to get out and around the state to connect with audiences. Meeting people where they live and work is the best way to understand what health news matters to them. And we’re also eager to connect with local editors and publishers, especially in rural communities. We can be a resource to each other, but first, we need to build the relationships to make that happen.”
