UNC-TV: HBCU Radio and Public Media North Carolina Together

In Brief

Radio stations at nine historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and UNC-TV are joining forces to bring the voices, stories, and culture of local communities across multiple media.

Summary

Radio stations at historically black colleges and universities in North Carolina are a valuable resource for local, relevant, and timely news for the communities they serve. A collaboration between HBCU radio stations and UNC-TV will give all involved an opportunity to learn from each other and collaborate across mediums. Eight stations will participate in the project spanning from Elizabeth City to Fayetteville to Salisbury to Winston-Salem.

Dubbed “HBCU Radio and Public Media North Carolina Together,” the project springboards from the weekly Black Issues Forum series on UNC-TV, which has been on the air for over 30 years. The show experienced a boost in engagement in February 2018 when it aired a special episode featuring HBCU leadership and a short documentary called “Tell Them We Are Rising” created by Stanley Nelson. Going forward, the forum will draw from the partnering HBCU stations to formulate expanded events. The ultimate goal of the project is to foster partnerships that lead to robust, engaged, empowering multimedia content across multiple platforms and greater access to news for communities statewide.
