Local Fix Readers Share the Women Working in Local News They Admire
Every week, the Local Fix newsletter explores journalism sustainability, innovation, and community engagement through the lens of local news. At the core of all of that are the people making it all happen.
In November, we asked Local Fix readers to share who they are thankful for as one way to highlight and recognize some of those people. Last week, in honor of International Women’s Day (and inspired by a Twitter thread from The New York Times’ Nikole Hannah-Jones), we asked Local Fix readers to again share names, this time of women they admire working in local news.
In no way is this an exhaustive list, but just a sampling of the many, many women working to make local news stronger. Have more names to share? Give some props on Twitter – tweet names and accolades to @TheLocalNewsLab.
I nominate Karen Moses, who, after 35 years of climbing the ladder at one company, broke the glass ceiling and was named Editor-In-Chief at the Albuquerque Journal, New Mexico’s largest news organization. …she’s committed to a strong, independent press, providing a strong watch-dog role, while negotiating some challenging times in the news business.

At Chalkbeat, I nominate our COO Rebecca Ross and our managing editor Philissa Cramer. Also our editors Sarah Darville, Marta Aldrich, Julie Topping, Cassi Feldman, product leader Sarah Glen, growth editor Candace Carrington, reporters Melanie Asmar, Yesenia Robles, Ann Schimke, Shaina Cavazos, Dylan Peers McCoy, Grace Tatter, Laura Kebede, Caroline Bauman, Erin Einhorn, Monica Disare, and Christina Veiga, and ops/finance team members Ramsay Kubal and Jennifer Jones.
Also, Rebekah Monson of Whereby.us.
And Molly de Aguiar of the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation.

We’re proud of the many, many woman who have led the way as local news entrepreneurs – too many to mention, roughly half of the sites associated with LION were launched and are run by women.
A few examples:

Charlotte-Anne Lucas of NowCastSA in San Antonio
Liena Zagare of Corner Media in Brooklyn
Denise Civiletti of Riverhead Local on Long Island
Rose Hoban of North Carolina Health News
Leslie David of Benito Link in California

Denise Lockwood of the Racine County Eye in Wisconsin, and on and on.
Also, have to mention Jan Schaffer of J-Lab, who has helped guide so many.

Charlotte Anne Lucas of nowcastsa.com is definitely a favorite, Traven Rice of Thelowdownny.com is amazing and Denise Lockwood of https://www.racinecountyeye.com is a hard working woman.
I love being a local independent online news publisher along with these women! LION Publishers rock.
